April 17, 1878. Guillaume Dael is a railroad employee at the railroad line Aachen-Maastricht. Thomas Edison invents the light bulb, there is no water pipe in Maastricht yet, and in 1878 Maastricht's most famous industrialist dies: Petrus Regout (menier Pie).
Because of the success of Regout's factories, the economy is booming. This stimulates Guillaume Dael and his wife Catharina to start a store in 'comestibles', or delicacies, in 1878. These were generously available from the Dutch colonies at the time. In 1906 Guillaume took over the water-powered coffee roasting factory of the Firma Hustinx in the Heksenhoek in Maastricht, and he also has a marble facade mounted against the facade of Wolfstraat 28. He shows his ambition and is a proud entrepreneur who values quality. In 1928, Blanche, the youngest daughter of Guillaume and Catharina took over the business from her parents. Whether Guillaume was already thinking about the idea of roasting his coffee in 1878, we do not know. However, every day we commemorate the year of foundation when we drink a cup of Café 1878.
